Tickets and booking
How the ticket works, and what foreigners usually get wrong.
Before you buy
- Price. Free, but timed tickets are required and released three days ahead at 09:00. The Treasures Gallery costs CNY 30 and is worth it.
- Booking. Free tickets go in seconds and the booking page requires a Chinese ID number. Foreign visitors can usually walk in with a passport at the staffed desk to the right of the main entrance, but the Treasures Gallery is the exception — buy that in advance or you will queue twice.
- Payment. Most Chinese sights take WeChat Pay or Alipay only. Cash works at staffed windows but not at self-service machines; a licensed guide can pay on your behalf and settle with you at the end of the day.
Getting there and when to go
Metro Line 2 or 3 to Xiaozhai, exit D, then 15 minutes on foot west. It sits next to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, so most people pair the two.
09:00–17:30 (Mar–Nov), 09:00–17:00 (Dec–Feb). Closed Mondays. Last entry 60 minutes before closing.. The first hour after opening is the quietest — tour groups arrive around 09:30. Late afternoon gives better light but the main viewpoints start clearing people out, so shoot early if that is your priority.
Public transport reaches Shaanxi History Museum, but connections and waiting times add up. With luggage, older travellers, or two sights in one day, a car and driver removes the guesswork.
