What to see

Three things carry this sight. If you are short on time, do them in this order.

  • The nurserycubs between 08:00 and 09:30, when they are actually awake
  • Adult enclosures on the west sidefewer people, more pandas moving
  • Red panda walk-throughthey wander across the path, no barrier

Tickets and booking

How the ticket works, and what foreigners usually get wrong.

Before you buy

  • Price. CNY 55. No booking needed midweek; timed slots at weekends and holidays.
  • Booking. Pandas sleep 16 hours a day and the keepers feed them at 08:00. Arrive at 07:30 opening or you will spend three hours photographing sleeping bears — this is the single most common disappointment in Chengdu.
  • Payment. Most Chinese sights take WeChat Pay or Alipay only. Cash works at staffed windows but not at self-service machines; a licensed guide can pay on your behalf and settle with you at the end of the day.

Getting there and when to go

30 minutes north-east of central Chengdu by car, or Metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue then a 10-minute shuttle. Taxis from the city centre cost about CNY 50.

07:30–18:00 (Mar–Oct), 08:00–17:00 (Nov–Feb). Cubs fed 08:00–09:30.. The first hour after opening is the quietest — tour groups arrive around 09:30. Late afternoon gives better light but the main viewpoints start clearing people out, so shoot early if that is your priority.

Public transport reaches Chengdu Panda Base, but connections and waiting times add up. With luggage, older travellers, or two sights in one day, a car and driver removes the guesswork.

The one thing that goes wrong

Chengdu Panda Base: questions travellers ask

Morning or afternoon?
Morning, without question. 08:00–09:30 is feeding and play; after 11:00 they are asleep in the shade and stay that way until closing.
How do I get close enough for photos?
The enclosures have glass and moats — you cannot get close. Bring a 200 mm lens or use the nursery viewing windows, which are 2 metres from the cubs.
Is the base cruel?
It is a research and breeding facility, not a zoo, and the enclosures are large. It is also the reason the species is no longer critically endangered. Judge for yourself, but it is not a circus.
